January 27, 2009

For den meeting today we went over to the Jr High and talked to the science teacher. He talked to the boys about what a scientist does. How scientist use their senses to discover and research things. The boys were able to look at and touch a coyote skull, rabbit pelt, redwood pine cone, sea creatures, and a manikin. We missed the boys who were not there. I hope we can make it up.

Den Meeting January 6, 2009

We will be working on the scientist pin this month. Today we talked about the Bernoulli's Principle. We watched an example online and then we did our own experiment to illustrate the principle. Then we talked about Newton's first law of motion. There was a cute illustation of this online and then we experimented with that law. We also talked about Pascal's law and some of the inventions that use the principles from that law. The boys that were there had a good time and passed off three requirements toward this pin.

We had the boys log onto five web sites and navigate them. The boys worked in pairs on three computers. We talked about word processors and showed the boys how to spell check a document. They each have the assignment to write a letter on the computer and spell check it. Also they are to e-mail me a short letter. When I recieve the e-mail they will pass off the requirement. My e-mail is ekspeth@juno.com. I hope that the parents will help with these assignments.

Den Meeting October 14th

Today in Den Meeting I worked with some of the boys to pass off past things and record what they need. It looks like Jaren and Mitchel will get their outdoorsman pins next pack meeting. Jaren will also get his artist pin. A couple boys are very close with those two pins. If you want to look at the requirements you see that he has done it already, at school or home, or that he can do it easily. Make a note of things that your son does at home and send it with him. We will talke to him about that and pass it off. For outdoorsman they must do some camping. If your son has camped since he turned 10 make a note of that, if not look for an opportunity for him to do that. It is required for outdoorsman and outdoorsman is required for the Arrow of Light.

Yesterday the boys built a fire in my garden. Ron helped them and they talked about fire safety. They also put up a tent and practiced their double half hitch, and tautline knots. They had a good time working on these outside.

Webelos Den Meeting Sept. 29, 2008

Today we had a small group. Alex, Jaren, Mitchel and Derick were there. It is getting close to Alex's birthday so we worked on some things that he needed. We talked about the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan. We also talked about the Webelos uniform and what the Webelos badge stands for. These are all requirements to get the Webelos Badge. We played a game where they acted out the different parts of the Oath.

Then we worked on the Communicator. We talked about how we communicate. The boys thought of six dfferent ways that we communicate, like, talking, texting, the telegraph, telephone, body language, instant messaging and e-mail. Then we gave them a message in sign language and they looked at the code and figured it out. They had a lot of fun making up their own story with hyroglyphs.
