Tuesday the 4th of October at our den meeting we had six boys. Alex, Danny, Jaren, Mitchel, Derick and Austin. We want to welcome Austin into our group. We worked on Communicator pin. We had the boys log onto five web sites and navigate them. The boys worked in pairs on three computers. We talked about word processors and showed the boys how to spell check a document. They each have the assignment to write a letter on the computer and spell check it. Also they are to e-mail me a short letter. When I recieve the e-mail they will pass off the requirement. My e-mail is ekspeth@juno.com. I hope that the parents will help with these assignments.

Den Meeting October 14th

Today in Den Meeting I worked with some of the boys to pass off past things and record what they need. It looks like Jaren and Mitchel will get their outdoorsman pins next pack meeting. Jaren will also get his artist pin. A couple boys are very close with those two pins. If you want to look at the requirements you see that he has done it already, at school or home, or that he can do it easily. Make a note of things that your son does at home and send it with him. We will talke to him about that and pass it off. For outdoorsman they must do some camping. If your son has camped since he turned 10 make a note of that, if not look for an opportunity for him to do that. It is required for outdoorsman and outdoorsman is required for the Arrow of Light.

Yesterday the boys built a fire in my garden. Ron helped them and they talked about fire safety. They also put up a tent and practiced their double half hitch, and tautline knots. They had a good time working on these outside.

Webelos Den Meeting Sept. 29, 2008

Today we had a small group. Alex, Jaren, Mitchel and Derick were there. It is getting close to Alex's birthday so we worked on some things that he needed. We talked about the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan. We also talked about the Webelos uniform and what the Webelos badge stands for. These are all requirements to get the Webelos Badge. We played a game where they acted out the different parts of the Oath.

Then we worked on the Communicator. We talked about how we communicate. The boys thought of six dfferent ways that we communicate, like, talking, texting, the telegraph, telephone, body language, instant messaging and e-mail. Then we gave them a message in sign language and they looked at the code and figured it out. They had a lot of fun making up their own story with hyroglyphs.

Den Meeting September 9, 2008

I had three boys come. We worked on artist, by making a collage and learning about the color wheel. Artist #4, #9. The boys were giving an assignment to make a profile of someone in their family. We talked about how to do it, it also tells about it in the book on page 106. I gave the boys a folder to put their art projects in and start an Art Portfolio. Artist #2 required. I promised a treat if boys do the silhouette an bring it to show.

On Wednesday the 3rd we went over to Valley Jr. High and talked to Ms. Coates about art. She is an art teacher there. They learned about some jobs in art, about finding joy and satisfaction in your own art, and they were instructed in making an oragami frog. This passed off Artist #1 required for that pin.

July 29, 2008
Today we worked on the Webelos requirements. We did requirements 7a,b,c on page 49. The boys are supposed to know the Scout salute, sign, handshake and when to use them. They need to know the law, oath, motto, slogan and what they mean. The boys who were here passed off these things.

We also worked on the Outdoorsman. We did requirements #5, 7, 10. We discussed the outdoor code, fire safety, and then we fused some ropes. What we did today will help the boys get their Webelos advancement, and then the Arrow of Light. Outdoorsman is required for Arrow of Light and the boys must camp to get it. At ten they are required to go with their family, so I hope that you will all plan a camping trip, even if it is only in the back yard.

July 9, 2008

Yesterday at our Webelos Den Meeting we made a poster about being a good citizen. Each of the boys there participated. That fulfilled the last requirement for the citizen belt loop. Some of the boys have now earned the citizenship pin. Remember this pin is required to get the Webelos Award. If your son was not at the meeting last week please do the character connection with him. Also if he has not completed a week of chores, or done a service project please work on those.

In the den meeting we also worked on the Naturalist pin that they started up at camp. At camp they did #7,#9,#10. We completed #5 and #6. So those boys there yesterday who went to camp will recieve the Naturalist pin.

We also worked on the Forester Pin. At camp they did #2 and we did #6 yesterday. We looked at a tree stump and talked about the tree rings.

These boys are doing very well. They are interested in what we learn. They want to earn the awards that we have been working so hard to earn. Please work with them so that they can accomplish their goals.

Thanks

Den Meeting July 1st

Den Meeting:
Matthew, and Mitchell were there. We worked on the character connection part of the Citizenship pin. This is a required pin, if you son was not there please talke to him about this. We reviewed some of the things that they did at camp. Then we went outside to practice some sporting skills. At camp the boys worked on the sportsman pin. They learned about flag football and played a game. One thing that they did not do is practice the skill for 30 minutes. That is required for the belt loop, which is required to get the pin. The other team sport was volleyball, so we practiced that also. To finish those pins each boy must do this. If you work with him at home please send a signed note telling what he did.

To complete the Citizen pin each boy must make a list and then keep track of his chores for a week. Each boy must also participate in a service project. The last thing is to make a poster about how to be a good citizen. We will do this next week at den meeting. If your son can make it he may make one on his own.

Remember to work on the rockets for Pack Meeting on July 22. You can also participate in the district activity if you would like.

Webelos

My purpose with this blog is to keep parents informed about what we have done or are working on in Webelos. My goal is to help each boy earn his Webelos advancement and then the Arrow of Light. I have been the Webelos Leader for about a year and half and I think I have a handle on the program. I have had 6 boys recieve their Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, and the only one that advances to Boy Scouts.

First of all to get the Webelos badge each boy must complete the requirements in his Webelos book on pages 49-51. We have done many of those and continue to work on them. If your son misses a meeting he may be missing some of these. He will have to make it up with you or arrange a time with us.

Two activity pins that are required for the Webelos are Fitness and Citizen.

We talked about Fitness early in the year. For this pin the boy must complete 7 out of 8 requirements on page 246 and 247 in his book. These include: read about meal planning, keep a record of what you eat, make a safety notebook, talk about tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. If your son has not earned this pin. Please help him do it.

Citizen we did at Camp. The presentation there was excellent. There are two things they didn't cover. #1 and #8 on page 144-146. #1 is the Character Connection we will talk about that at den meeting. #8 is the Citizen belt loop. The requirements for that are:
*Develop a list of jobs you can do around the home. Chart your progress for one week.
*Make a poster showing things that you can do to be a good citizen.
*Participate in a family, den, or school service project.
The stake is making a float for the 24th of July Parade. Tomorrow, June 25th at 6:00pm they will be painting leaves for the float. If your son could be there to help this will count for that service. Make a chart for jobs, do it for one week, bring it to show me, that will be done. We will make a poster together in den meeting.
